For many of us, the most essential piece of “making it” means having a safe, affordable and healthy home to rest our head and house our families.

But for too many housing is unreliable, expensive and in some cases unsafe. Simply put, Michigan families deserve better housing.

Lawmakers can act right now to ensure our 2025 State Budget includes critical funding to make home improvement more accessible to more Michiganders, while helping us reduce the 22% of total state greenhouse gas emissions that come from our residential housing.

I am writing as a concerned resident of Michigan to encourage you—my elected official—to support funding for affordable, healthy housing in the 2025 State Budget.

We commend Governor Whitmer’s call for $1.4 billion in state and federal funding to build or rehabilitate 10,000 homes of all sizes and varieties. That is why I ask you to target $100 million of that housing investment for a low-income, whole-home retrofit program. Investing in home retrofits is critical to making communities vibrant and saving people money.

Sustainable housing not only benefits homeowners, but also our Michigan workforce. I encourage you to support a $30 million appropriation to support and expand energy efficiency and building electrification workforce development across Michigan. These jobs can create seamless pathways for workers formerly employed in the fossil fuel industry and give them highly-marketable skills for a clean energy future.

I would also urge you to require the maximum 15% of LIHEAP funding be spent on the weatherization assistance program in Michigan. Currently most of our LIHEAP funding goes toward utility bill assistance programs, and while these programs are important, they don't address any of the underlying causes of unaffordable utility bills.

Utilizing a greater portion of the LIHEAP funds toward the weatherization assistance program will reduce energy usage in homes year after year, ensuring long-lasting affordability of energy bills. For every $100 invested in energy efficiency upgrades for our homes and businesses, we see $300 in savings. On average, weatherization saves Michiganders about $450 each year.

Michiganders need safer, more affordable housing. Period. You can act right now to take us one step closer by prioritizing sustainable, healthy housing in the 2025 State Budget.
