In her 2024 State of the State address, Gov. Whitmer laid out a bold vision for establishing Michigan as a place where every resident can “make it” —a place where people dream of planting their roots. But to “make it” here in our home state, Michiganders need better, more affordable housing; easy access to nature and transportation; and clean drinking water.

Lawmakers can act right now to ensure the FY 2025 State Budget allocates resources to support our people and make our communities more resilient. It should include investments in things like:

A whole home retrofit program to make our homes safer and more efficient
Transportation, e-bikes and community EV charging
Funding to clean up contaminated sediment from major rivers

Tell your lawmakers that this funding is necessary if we want to seriously attract new Michiganders and preserve the things that define us, like our lakes, forests, dunes, and hometowns.

I am writing as a concerned resident of Michigan to express my strong support for key priorities that will shape our state's future in clean energy, housing, transportation, and safe drinking water. The recent enactment of the Clean Energy Future package reflects a commendable commitment to a sustainable Michigan, and I urge you to prioritize the following areas in the upcoming state budget.

We commend Governor Whitmer’s call for $1.4 billion in state and federal funding to build or rehabilitate 10,000 homes of all sizes and varieties. Michiganders need safer, more affordable housing. Period. Investing in home retrofits is critical to making communities vibrant and saving people money. That is why I ask you to target $100 million of that housing investment towards low-income, whole-home retrofits.

To make our communities more accessible and reduce emissions, we also need to invest in our transportation infrastructure. I urge you to direct key funding to sustainable solutions like electric vehicles, public transit, community EV charging, and pedestrian-bicycle infrastructure.

The U.S. EPA and Michigan EGLE identified up to 5.1 million cubic meters of contaminated sediments in the Detroit River and 344,800 cubic meters Rouge River that desperately need clean up. The “Bipartisan Infrastructure Law” allocates over $1 billion in direct funding to support legacy polluted sediment cleanup efforts in the Great Lakes, and will provide 65% of the funding requirements for cleanup efforts in these rivers, both of which are Areas of Concern. However, these funds require a 35% non-federal match. We implore you to take advantage of this federal funding to clean up these major rivers.

We as Michiganders are defined by our Great Lakes; our beautiful freshwater resources; our forests, dunes, wetlands, and nature; and the grit and resilience that run through each and every community. As you determine how we invest in this great state, I implore you to put the places we love, and our people, first. Please see this complete list of budget priorities to ensure that happens.
