For the health and wellbeing of 1.5 million Michigan children, I, YOUR CONSTITUENT, urge you to support and pass the bipartisan Senate Bills 184 and 185 in the Michigan House.

These "Filter First" bills—sponsored by Sens. Curt VanderWall and Jim Ananich—will give our children safe, clean drinking water in all schools and childcare centers—including those in the district we both call home. They install filters on water fountains and taps, removing lead before children drink it. They also create a plan for schools to test their improved water regularly and share the great results with families.

These bills may sound familiar. That's because the Legislature overwhelmingly approved $50 million to fund lead filters for all schools and childcare centers in its last supplemental budget. Senate Bills 184 and 185 also just cleared the Senate 35-1.

Now, you and your colleagues have just a few days to vote "yes." Our kids don't have time to wait for another legislative session. According to the CDC, no amount of lead is safe for people to ingest, especially children, and studies show that 80% of children across Michigan have at least traces of lead in their bodies. This neurotoxin can stunt development, make learning difficult, and physically sicken.

Schools and childcare centers new and old are especially prone to lead polluting kids' drinking water. Water stagnates when it's not used over weekends and vacations, making lead contamination more likely.

The “Filter First'' approach of Senate Bills 184 and 185 is the most comprehensive, cost-efficient, and quickest way to protect our children from lead poisoning.

The health and wellbeing of our kids cannot be punted to another legislative session, not with a solution that is so reasonable, so effective, and so bipartisan right before you. Your vote in support of Senate Bills 184 and 185 can ensure children are able to learn, to make friends, and to thrive now and far into the future.
