Please Support Climate Solutions Council Recommendations
Dear Director Clark, For the future of our state and our planet, the time to take strong action to combat climate change is now. As you work to finalize a statewide climate plan to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in Michigan by 2050, I want to express my support for the following recommendations in Michigan’s climate action plan: ENERGY PRODUCTION Adopt a 100% zero-carbon energy standard by 2035 that does not rely on new nuclear energy, carbon capture and sequestration, and carbon offsets Adopt policies that enable and encourage people to generate their own renewable energy and to better manage their energy use Launch a planning process to determine how to best help Michiganders and utilities transition off of methane TRANSPORTATION AND MOBILITY Incorporate climate into transportation plans by developing greenhouse gas budgets Expand access to convenient, zero-emission public transit and develop a statewide plan to encourage non-motorized mobility Fund EV charging infrastructure and the creation of an EV purchase incentive BUILDINGS AND HOUSING Require all new heating equipment sales to be electric by 2035 Reform existing energy efficiency programs to better facilitate weatherization and shell improvements, especially for low-income residents Use the influx of federal dollars to create a fund for decarbonization retrofits of affordable housing and new financing options NATURAL WORKING LANDS Establish a moratorium on wetlands destruction and use existing state planning processes to encourage wetland preservation and restoration Prohibit the energy, transportation, and building sectors from using nature-based offsets Focus forest maintenance plans on increasing ecological health and pursue establishing a 30 x 30 land protection target ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AND CLIMATE JUSTICE Directly reduce energy burden and emissions in vulnerable, underinvested communities Require state agencies to conduct analyses of climate impacts using an EJ screen that establishes a baseline of emissions and cumulative impacts, and regularly measures progress on pollution reductions in EJ communities Use federal COVID dollars to prioritize jobs training programs and resiliency investments in EJ communities This is our moment—we must make critical moves to combat climate change, and ensuring we have a strong climate plan is the first step our state must take to do this. Let's get this right, so the Michigan we love today is even stronger and more beautiful tomorrow.
