As the legislative session nears a close, I, your constituent, urge you to act quickly to support the Michigan Clean Energy Future Package, including SB 271, SB 273, and SB 502.

While significant compromises have been made to arrive at this moment, I firmly believe the legislation represents a positive step forward toward advancing clean, renewable energy in Michigan, strengthening energy efficiency investments, and increasing protections for all Michigan utility customers, especially those with low incomes.

The bills will help create 160,000 new jobs, allow Michigan to more than double the funding it secures from the Inflation Reduction Act, and save households on energy costs. I also believe these substitute bill drafts represent a reasonable compromise. They provide sufficient flexibility for utility companies and other energy providers to incrementally ramp up use of renewable power – the cheapest energy source available today – and reach 100% clean energy in a way that will not be cost prohibitive nor burden consumers. SB 271 also includes multiple paths for the utilities to press pause on the clean energy ramp in the unlikely scenario that it becomes necessary to ensure reliable and affordable power.

I urge the Legislature to act without delay and for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to sign this crucial bill package into law. Michigan families cannot afford to wait any longer. With so little time left in this fall legislative session and continued challenges with Michigan’s grid, it is critical to move these bills as soon as possible. I urge you to hold a committee hearing and vote on these substitute bills urgently.
