Can you imagine giving a company like Enbridge Energy, which owns the pipeline under the Mackinac Straits, the final say in how much oil they must clean up after a spill? Senate Bills 652 and 653 create two new panels to oversee environmental permitting and regulation. Shockingly, the individuals appointed to these panels--as called for in the legislation--will represent business interests that directly profit from the discharge of pollutants into Michigan’s air and water.

Stacked with individuals representing the very businesses being regulated, these panels would decide the “appropriate” levels of toxic smokestack emissions and how clean a contaminated ...

Stacked with individuals representing the very businesses being regulated, these panels would decide the “appropriate” levels of toxic smokestack emissions and how clean a contaminated site must be before its owners walk away.  This is not only horrible news for our health and Michigan’s natural resources, it’s a stunning conflict of interest.
